On June 5 2008 the association was re-launched to celebrate its change of name from The Brighton Association of Analytical Psychotherapists (BACP) to Psychotherapy Sussex (PS) and to mark twenty-five years of professional activity in Brighton, Hove and Sussex. We aimed to provide an opportunity for the public and local referrers to learn about the association and its members and to explore challenges faced by the ‘talking cure’ in the 21st century.
The auditorium of the Brighthelm Centre was filled to capacity as the guest speaker, Susie Orbach, responded to a range of questions including: the role of analytical psychotherapy in the recent government initiative to widen provision of psychological therapies; the role of analytic thinking in understanding contemporary cultural issues such as the ‘obesity crisis’ and ‘body hatred’; and on how the mental health profession can tackle the challenges posed by an increasingly diverse society.
As hoped, Susie’s responses showed that psychoanalytic psychotherapy is applicable to the everyday problems of contemporary society and presented an open, accessible view of the psychoanalytic approach. The event also provided an opportunity for all those engaged locally in the caring professions to meet informally, intermingle and build alliances for the future.
The launch was filmed by ‘Junk TV’ for inclusion on the web site, reported in the Evening Argus and featured in the ‘Latest 7′ magazine. PS leaflets and a newsletter were distributed to all who attended. To see the video links click:
