Dr Heather Wood: Virtual Sex and the Internal World

Drawing on clinical material, Heather Wood will use a psychoanalytic framework to consider what is it that virtual sex offers, not just to the conscious mind but to the unconscious, that can render it so compelling for vulnerable individuals, and some factors contributing to escalating use. Those using legal and illegal pornography vary in their characteristics and motivations, and she will explore the popular notion that use of child pornography is inevitably driven by a primary sexual interest in children.  She will also refer to issues of therapeutic technique when working with patients with such problems.  Click for details

 

Dr Heather Wood started her career at Sussex University in the 1970s. Now Consultant Adult Psychotherapist and Clinical Psychologist at the Portman Clinic, Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, she has a special interest in the compulsive use of virtual sex and the related field of paedophillia and has published on these and other topics. She is a member of the British Association of Psychotherapists and also in private practice.
